The Rio Metro Regional Transit District and the New Mexico Rail Runner Express have had a commitment to safety from day one. Our crew and operators undergo thorough training to ensure that your riding experience is as safe and secure as possible.

Rio Metro Security

Our top priority is to provide a safe and secure environment for the public, as they utilize our transportation services.

  • All stations and trains are equipped with emergency Push-To-Talk intercom telephones (E-Tels) that provide a direct connection to local emergency dispatch. The phones are located on the kiosk station near the station boarding and platform areas (at the Santa Fe Depot, the E-Tel is near the southeast corner of the depot building). Use the phones to report any activity you believe is important, or to receive whatever emergency services may be needed.

  E-Tel Instructions:
  In case of an emergency, press the Red button. Press the Black button to get connected to New Mexico Rail Runner Express Customer Service.

  • Each station is equipped with camera surveillance.
  • Cameras may monitor car, bicycle and pedestrian traffic.
  • Parking at any New Mexico Rail Runner Express station is at your own risk. Rio Metro Regional Transit District and the New Mexico Department of Transportation are not responsible for loss or damage to vehicles or vehicle contents.

Security on Buses and Trains

In addition to Rail Runner security officers, we work with local Law Enforcement to keep you safe!

• • Ticket agents make sure riders pay their fares.
  • Conductors answer questions and help you at the stations.
  • Bus drivers and train crews are trained in basic First Aid.
  • Security officers perform spot checks on trains throughout the day and evening.
  • When needed, bus drivers and train crews may call local Emergency Responders to assist.

If You See Something, Say Something

                            • Report any suspicious behavior in and around transit stations, bus stops and facilities.
                            • Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings.
                            • Call 911 if you are a witness or a victim of a crime.
                            • On a train platform, press the E-Tel intercom button for help at any time.
                            • Observe your location and surroundings, so that you can give a full description of people and vehicles.
                            • Alert train or bus staff immediately about unattended packages.
